On 1 December 2023 Brazil will assume the Presidency of the G20 for 2024, following India in 2023 and Indonesia in 2022. Under the shadow of Russia's war on Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East, and in the context of a world that is still facing up to the social, economic and political effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, the consecutive presidencies face the task of steering the group of major economies towards some degree of consensus on key issues, despite growing fractures and polarisation. A fortnight before the new presidency takes over, this EPRS event will examine the role and importance of the G20, the outcome of the most recent Leaders' Summit in Delhi, and the agendas of the consecutive presidencies of Indonesia, India, Brazil and South Africa (2025) in the current geopolitical environment. Speakers will also reflect on the importance of the format for the EU, and the prospects for global governance.

Since 2012 – when Xi was first made General-Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) – the China-Russia relationship has evolved into an informal alliance in the face of what both countries consider a rising threat from the West to their regimes. Chinas response to Russias war on has so far been much closer to Russia than it was in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea. At the same time, developments since Russias invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 have increased Russias dependency on China, which some now qualify as a rising vassalisation of Russia.

The EU is an open economy, reliant on global supply chains to a higher extent than the US and China. At the same time, these complex chains are subject to increasing disruptions and uncertainties with many areas of fragility. De-risking Europe’s global critical supply chains (particularly in the context of relations with China), points towards a more nuanced way of ensuring Europes ambitions for increased resilience and strategic autonomy. It can be achieved by increasing domestic production, greater autonomy in the critical raw materials, use of trade tools and cooperation on a global stage.
