On New Year Day 2019 the Epping Ongar Railway ran a steam only service using Metropolitan No.1, E class 0-4-4 tank built 1896 and 80078, BR Standard Class 4 2-6-4 tank built 1956. Various combinations of these locomotives was used throughout the day.
At first each locomotive ran on its own hauling a train. Both together double-heading a thrash up the 1/73 incline from Ongar to North Weald. Top & tailing for the extra runs from North Weald to 'Epping Forest' (between Coopersale and Epping). Top & tailing continued for the rest of the day.
Most of the day was cool and dull but for a few brief moments both locos were brilliantly illuminated by the low evening sun.
