Peak Times and Where to Look
Best Seasons: Spring (following hibernation) and summer (mating season) are the most active periods.
Time of Day: Early mornings (6 a.m. to 10 a.m.) and late afternoons/evenings (3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) offer the highest chances of spotting bears.
Look Up: The Smokies' black bears are known for climbing trees. You can often spot mothers and cubs lounging on thick tree limbs.
Roads: Make sure to check Hyatt Lane and Sparks Lane, as they are renowned for frequent bear sightings.
Safety & RegulationsFederal regulations require visitors to stay at least 50 yards (150 feet) away from all wildlife, including bears. Approaching closer than this is illegal, as it disturbs the animals and can result in fines or arrests.
