Thomas Edison is often called the "Father of Motion Pictures" for developing the first commercially viable movie camera, the Kinetograph, and its viewing counterpart, the Kinetoscope. While Edison provided the vision and funding, the technical heavy lifting was done by his assistant, William Kennedy Laurie Dickson.
Kinetograph: Invented around 1890, this was the first functioning motion picture camera contained in a single housing. It used 35mm celluloid film with sprocket holes—a standard still used today—to move film precisely past the lens.
Kinetoscope: Patented in 1891, this "peep-hole" viewer allowed one person at a time to watch a short film loop through a magnifying lens.
Black Maria: Built in 1893 in West Orange, New Jersey, this was the world's first film production studio. It sat on a rotating track to follow the sun, providing the constant bright light required for early filming.
Edison's studio produced hundreds of short "flickers," typically lasting less than a minute:

However, after the success of the Lumière brothers' projected cinema in France, Edison acquired the rights to a projector developed by Thomas Armat and Francis Jenkins, marketing it as the Vitascope in 1896.
