Yet another song originally created for our English Week performance. If Daga was made for Filipino Week, this was its counterpart. We lost the competition this time 'round, but it was too good of a song to leave behind. I'm still proud of what we accomplished as a choir of mostly non-musicians and singers.
I came up with the melodies one faithful night, while jammin' out to my recorder. It was a really fun experience, since everything quite literally just unfolded in front of me. A song I've been working on for a week, finally finished because of some random burst of energy one night. Great stuff!!
The song uses two instances of the circle of fifths chord progression, something I'm using a lot recently. (for better of for worse...) But I'm quite proud of the other melodies, especially the marchy-type one (which, if you notice, I used for Altiora Petamus BetaV4.)
As it is originally from a SPEECH CHOIR performance, it has lyrics. It's from an English translation of the Nāsadīya Sūkta, also known as the Hymn of Creation. Here, I modified it for better musicality:
There was neither non-existence
nor existence then
There was neither the realm of space nor
the sky, which is beyond
Was there water bottomlessly deep?
Neither death nor immortality then
There was no distinguishing sign of light
nor of day
That one breathed,
windless,
by its own impulse,
other than that there was nothing beyond!
(DARKNESS!)
Desire came upon
that one in the beginning
and that was the first seed of mind
And the poets were seeking,
in their hearts with wisdom, for the
bond of existence
in non-existence
Their chord was extended across
Was there below? Was there above?
And there were the seed placers;
and there were powers,
there was impulse beneath
there was giving forth above!
There was neither non-existence
nor existence then
There was neither the realm of space nor
the sky, which is beyond
Was there water bottomless deep?
Neither death nor immortality then
There was no distinguishing sign of light
nor of day
Who will really know?
Who will here proclaim it?
Whence was it produced?
Whence was this creation?
The gods came afterwards -
creators of this universe -
Who then knows when it has arisen?
Whence this creation,
has arisen - perhaps it formed itself
or perhaps it did not -
the one who looks down on it
in the highest heaven, only he knows ...
Or perhaps, or perhaps,
or perhaps, or perhaps,
or perhaps, or perhaps,
Or perhaps...
He does not know.
