Every organism that moves through the ocean leaves behind traces of its presence. Those left-behind materials are called environmental DNA or eDNA. By taking a water or sediment samples and analyzing those genetic traces, scientists can identify which organisms are (or were) present in an ecosystem. Through the study of eDNA, researchers will be able to gain a better understanding of biodiversity and possible conservation measures to protect our ocean.

Here’s how we do that in 60 seconds.
