Engraving exhibition model, probably English, c. 1800. An English lever, fusee watch laid out in a vertical design held with custom made cocks and mounted to a brass plate. Back plate, cocks and wheels are fully engraved with high quality filigree, birds, and plants with border surround; all mounted within purpose-built case with key. Model 1 3/4" x 4 1/4".
While this model has a visible escapement it is not an escapement model. The parts are all exactly the scale as would have been found in a standard English fusee movement. In fact if one looks closely the original fusee stop cam is still there even though the current movement wheel layout makes this superfluous; instead a Geneva stop has been installed to prevent over winding.
The purpose of this model is to highlight the engraving skills of the maker. Every surface is carefully worked and the diminutive size of the entire model makes the engraving even more difficult than might be seen on the back movement plate of a clock from the same period.
