Biofuels in helicopters
The Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center, along with the Redstone Test Center, just completed testing a biofuel compound in two Army helicopters. Isobutanol – or “Alcohol to Jet”, an alcohol-based bio-fuel – was part of an experiment that, itself, fulfilled a congressionally-funded program to test jet fuel made from non-food stock corn in rotary wing aircraft.
A quick charge for lithium-ion batteries
The upside to lithium ion batteries is that they can store a lot of energy in a small space. The downside is they take a long time to charge. But that could all change with a team of researchers from the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore who claim that their creation has the ability to charge to 70 percent capacity in just two minutes.
A breakthrough for nuclear fusion
Lockheed Martin is claiming a nuclear energy breakthrough that could create a portable reactor small enough to fit on the back of a truck. And if all goes right, the compact fusion reactor could be ready in as little as 10 years, with the design, build, and testing taking less than a year, followed by a prototype in five years.
