Barry Schneider, president and COO of Steel Dynamics, describes Rose-Hulman as challenging; yet designed to help students be successful. “That is the small school approach, where faculty are committed to your education,” said Schneider, BSME, 1990 & MSEM 2011. “You’re not a bother. You’re a purpose.” In 1995, Schneider was a founding member of Steel Dynamics, then a new start-up waiting to be built on a cornfield in northeastern Indiana. Schneider describes that period of working with a team to build the steel mill as reminiscent of his time at Rose-Hulman. “We all had a shared common struggle. We had to build the mill, relocate our families, and figure out how to get better at what we do.” Thirty years later, Steel Dynamics is an S&P traded company and is building the future using efficiently made and low carbon footprint steel.
