Today is #EndangeredSpeciesDay, and 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the US Endangered Species Act (ESA). The ESA was enacted with the sole intention of preventing the extinction and harm of endangered species and their habitats. Our dedicated Zoo team cares for 65 endangered species, including 25 critically endangered species, by providing them with the highest level of wellbeing, husbandry, and enrichment at every stage of their lives. In addition to caring for the animals here at the Zoo, the L.A. Zoo participates in critical recovery programs, including programs for the California condor, southern mountain yellow-legged frog, and peninsular pronghorn. These efforts and the dedicated work of all our staff and volunteers contribute to conservation both locally and globally in saving animals from extinction. The L.A. Zoo’s work to create a world where people and wildlife thrive together would not be possible without the ESA, collaboration with our conservation partners, and YOU! By visiting the Zoo, you’re supporting conservation, both here in California and around the world. Together, we can create even more impactful changes over the next 50 years to save the biodiversity around us.
