🦈 ENDANGERED DUSKY SHARK PINGS IN THE GULF
Adult female Mira, the only dusky shark tagged by OCEARCH, recently pinged west of Sarasota, FL (Aug 19). This was Mira’s first ping since March 10, 2026. She was originally tagged off Jacksonville in May 2025 and measured 9’8” long at the time of tagging.
Dusky sharks are classified as Endangered by the IUCN and were heavily impacted by overfishing due to their slow growth and low reproductive rates. Seeing Mira use Gulf waters is encouraging, particularly for a species that was heavily impacted by overfishing and nearly disappeared from the region in the 1980s and 90s.
