Empirical and Molecular Formulas
Empirical and molecular formulas both describe the composition of a chemical compound, but they do so in different ways.
Empirical Formula
Empirical Formula is often the starting point.
Derived from experimental data like mass percentages.
Simplest whole-number ratio of atoms that shows relative proportions

Molecular Formula
Molecular Formula is found by multiplying the empirical formula by a whole number (called the n-value) based on the compound’s molar mass.
Actual number of atoms in a molecule that shows exact composition

Can They Be the Same?
Empirical Formula
Yes, if the ratio can't be simplified

Molecular Formula
Yes, when the compound is already in simplest form
How to Find
Empirical Formula
From percent composition or combustion analysis

Molecular Formula
From empirical formula + molar mass
Example
If a compound has an empirical formula of CH₂ and a molar mass of 28 g/mol, and the empirical formula mass is 14 g/mol, then:
28 ÷ 14 = 2 → Molecular formula = C₂H4
