Embryonic Development of the Islets of Langerhans | #science #medical  #scientificanimation  @Nymus3D

The Islets of Langerhans are a crucial part of the human endocrine system, and understanding their formation is vital for gaining insights into combating diseases such as diabetes. These structures are formed from an initial cord, from which cells that express neurogenin-3 emerge and form buds. The cells in these buds differentiate to form the mature islet, which then becomes vascularized, providing the blood with various hormones, including insulin.

Nadav Sharon of the Doug Melton group at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute approached us to visualize his research. In the process of creating the animation, we developed a numerical model to emulate the behaviour of the cells involved. The model to drive the animation (youtu.be/8RN4bQBn1ls) proved very insightful and led to Sharon going back in the lab to validate it. This in the end led to a contribution on our part to his publication in Cell.
We are proud to have contributed to this project by developing tools and methods that visualize nature in a way that has never been shown before. Our work is an excellent example of how visualizing science can lead to new insights and discoveries.

Visualizing science is essential for communicating complex concepts and results in a way that is both accurate and engaging. This project was a great example of how scientific visualization can enhance scientific research and discovery. By using computer graphics to illustrate scientific phenomena, we can not only make them more accessible and understandable, but also uncover new patterns and relationships that might otherwise go unnoticed. Scientific visualization is not just a way of showing what we already know, but also a way of exploring what we don’t yet know.

It allows researchers to share their findings with a broader audience, including policymakers, educators, and the general public. By making science more accessible and understandable, we can inspire future generations of scientists and help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.
