Those little single notes that sit all by themselves in the left hand — the ones right before an octave — trip up a lot of players. Here is the shortcut: that little note is almost always the FIFTH of the octave that is coming next. So stop reading it as one more thing to figure out. Put your 2 finger on it — here it is a C# — and your hand is already sitting exactly where the next octave needs it to be.
Elton John did this all the time, and so did most of the great piano singer-songwriters. It is what gives you a walking, connected left hand instead of a row of disconnected thumps.
This is from my lesson on Randy Newman's "Short People" — measure 66, coming out of the F7 into A, F#m7, B7 and E7, where the chords start coming at you twice as fast: two beats per chord instead of a full measure each.
