This is Santander. A port city in the north coast of Spain in Cantabria. It's mentioned for the first time in writing in 1068. Although there are structures pre dating this. here is a painting of Santander made around 1590 by the Flemmish painter Joris Hoefnagel The harbor port was used in the late middle ages
and also for trade with the new world. Santander

My Grandfather was orphaned at an early age. both parents Felix and Elvira died Leaving young Eloy and his sister Balbina in the care of his Uncle Mateo Escagedo Salmon
Later in America where my family eventually ended up. I would sit here in Sweetwater with my Grandfather as he would recount his life on the mountain, his travels with his uncle and his dog Lobo. I would sit with him taking in the stories as a young boy that I have with me to this day. Among these stories were his travels to the
mountain with his uncle, archaeological investigations and ancient cave paintings. His uncle and my 2nd great uncle Mateo Escagedo
Salmon was a historian and chronicler of the area. In Mateo's lifetime he was able to piece together the ancestral lines of the people and nobles of the area. So there were many tales to tell and I remember the stories only in part. I was very young and a long time has past.

Here is an old document telling the story and life of Mateo Escagedo Salmon. As far as I have learned thus far. This excerpt from this longer article depicts the oldest mention of my family origin. It is in Spanish and I will translate using Google Spanish to English.
Maliano on this date had 22 neighbors and 10 widows, there were 36 inhabitable houses, seven uninhabitable and four ruined. All the neighbors and residents of the town were noble and
sonsdalgos. There were 30 pairs of farm oxen, 40 breeding cows, 16 three-year-old steers ... etc. There was then in the village a mountain of tall oaks that belonged to the king, who later we met

My Grandfather was studying for priesthood and the behest of his uncle and guardian Mateo Escagedo Salmon. At some point he decided he did not want that life and according to family stories he was sent off to Cuba to work with his other uncle Gregorio Escagedo and Brother of Mateo. Gregorio had left Spain for Cuba and would own many businesses in cluding Sugar mills and plantations such as Central Fidencia. Here is a document and photos of the business. I will read an excerpt.
My Grandfather lived in Aguada de pasajeros Cuba where he married Ramona Lliraldi. Ramona my Grandmother was born July 3rd 1911 in Cuba. They had a son, my Father Eloy Escagedo Lliraldi born Nov 14th 1942. Eloy owned and operated a store that sold fabrics and other items. Political unrest on the island in future years would see the family immigrate to Miami Florida in the early 1960s. Eventually I was born. This mini documentary is meant to be an overview of my recent ancestral story from my Fathers side.
Much is left unsaid and shown. There are thousands of photos, some with dates others without, As well as official documents and more.
