Elon Musk argues that America should recruit exceptional people from around the world because their intelligence and talent can make this country stronger. I think that's a trap.
In today's show, I explain why America's success isn't simply the product of collecting the smartest individuals on Earth. It's the product of an American culture that created the conditions in which exceptional people could build, innovate, and prosper in the first place. When we import people in sufficiently large numbers, we're not simply importing their résumés and IQ—we're importing different cultures, values, political preferences, families, and expectations along with them.
I also examine Elon Musk's argument that we can simply filter immigration for exceptional talent and explain why I don't believe that's a practical answer to the larger problem. Geniuses aren't what made America exceptional. America created an environment where genius could actually accomplish something. If we destroy that environment in pursuit of imported talent, we've sacrificed the very thing those talented people came here to find.
