Before Game 1, Elmo's official account tweeted "Elmo hopes both teams have fun," and New York lost its mind. The NYPD called him an imposter, the city threatened the Sesame Street sign, Wendy's and the Empire State Building piled on, and a fan paraded a mock Elmo head on a pike with a "TRAITOR" sign after the Knicks won the title. Then Jalen Brunson kissed an Elmo doll at the championship parade and ended it — and Elmo came out backing Team USA in the World Cup so he'd never have to stay neutral again.
