Got my X52 Joystick set up and decided to go for the tutorial mission again.
Nub tips from another nub:
try your best to adjust between your Systems, Engines, and Weapons power. You can adjust this balance on the fly to affect your combat effectiveness a ton.
I, for the most part, kept points out of weapons because I was using autocannons. Autocannons don't generate much heat compared to lasers.
Bump up engines when you're just needing to catch up.
Bump up systems for faster shield recharge and for beefier shields if you're expecting a head-on pass.
Note: The voice comms is just buddies in the teamspeak channel
