All this to say, Elio… isn’t Elemental. It doesn’t register as a Pixar experience.
The character designs don’t surprise like Elemental, the journey isn’t fascinating like Soul.
It does understand family better than the Lilo&Stitch remake, and is certainly more charming than your average Illumination movie, but it closes a half-decade of Pixar original projects that deserved better and was worse than almost all of them.
