Vassily Sinaisky - Conductor

Elgar’s Enigma Variations, begun in October 1898 and first performed in London under the great conductor Hans Richter in June 1899, marked his breakthrough from the provincial musical life of Worcestershire and Herefordshire to national and, soon afterwards, international celebrity. The piece consists of a theme, 13 variations and an extended Finale (lengthened after the first performance); the variations are free variations, self-contained character-pieces which develop one idea or another from the theme without sticking closely to its melody or harmony. And the whole work adds up to a group portrait of the composer and members of his circle, all identified by initials or nicknames.

Vassily Sinaisky’s international career was launched in 1973 when he won the Gold Medal at the prestigious Karajan Competition in Berlin. His early work with Kirill Kondrashin at the Moscow Philharmonic and with Ilya Musin at the Leningrad Conservatoire provided him with an incomparable grounding. He was appointed Chief Conductor of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (1976 to 1987) and then Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic. He was Principal Guest Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic, Music Director of the Russian State Orchestra, Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow. He is currently Conductor Emeritus of the BBC Philharmonic.
