With as many as 200,000 elephants, Botswana is the best country in Africa to view this species. By the end of the dry season, hot and thirsty elephants surround every waterhole and river in northern Botswana. By midday when temperatures soar to 40 °c, the elephants start coming down to drink, very often at a run. They have a set routine – first priority is a drink, then its time for a cooling swim, then it’s a mud bath and finally a good a dust bath. Then its back to what elephants do best – eating.
