Giraldo focuses on spectral element applications in space-weather simulations in the atmospheric and entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin (ESDG) methods in hydrostatic ocean modeling including a nonhydrostatic atmosphere component in the ESDG framework. All models are GPU-capable but only present results showing the multi-GPU capability of the ESDG codes that are based on the Julia programming language.
Frank Giraldo is a distinguished professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California; he also holds an appointment as adjunct professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Frank received degrees from Princeton and the University of Virginia. He pioneered element-based Galerkin methods in nonhydrostatic atmospheric modeling and through his teaching and collaboration has helped a number of atmospheric modeling efforts develop operational weather predictions systems based on these methods. His book on element-based Galerkin methods was published by Springer in 2020. Frank’s research is primarily focused on applied problems in climate, weather, and ocean.
