Join Elektor Lab Talk on Thursday, 6 August 2026, at 16:00 CEST for a practical discussion with Brian Tristam Williams, Jens Nickel, and Saad Imtiaz about mobile power, USB-C charging, lithium-ion batteries, power banks, wireless charging, and the claims printed on chargers and cables.
A €25 show, brought to you free thanks to eeNews Europe:
eenewseurope.com
USB-C may have standardized the connector, but charging remains surprisingly complicated. We’ll discuss how USB-C Power Delivery negotiates voltage and current, why the charger and cable must both support the required power level, and why a product marked “120 W” may deliver considerably less than advertised.
We’ll talk charger ratings, cable quality, damaged connectors, power banks, wireless phone chargers, charging efficiency, heat, and the practical tools used to check what a charger is actually doing.
We’ll also look inside the battery side of mobile power: lithium-ion charging stages, protection circuits, capacity, aging, temperature, cell balancing, safe storage, and why batteries should not generally be left fully charged for long periods. Larger battery-powered devices such as hoverboards will provide a useful starting point for discussing battery-pack quality, physical damage, unsuitable chargers, unattended charging, and the causes of thermal runaway.
Brian, Jens, and Saad will also take a look at their favorite Elektor Labs project submissions from readers.
The team will also look at other current Elektor Labs activity and highlight projects, components, and developments worth watching.
Giveaway:
Viewers will have a chance to win an FNIRSI FNB58 USB tester from the Elektor Store at elektor.com. It can measure USB voltage, current, power, capacity, and energy, identify common fast-charging protocols, and help determine whether chargers and cables perform as claimed. It is an especially useful tool for testing USB-C Power Delivery chargers, power banks, cables, and questionable high-wattage specifications!
