This Lego zoetrope reimagines 19th-century animation with a high-voltage twist. Powered by a 6-pole electrostatic induction motor, the rotating cylinder displays a sequence of horse-racing images that come to life under a xenon strobe—charging 16,000 volts for a one-minute gallop.

Unlike traditional zoetropes with vertical slits, this version mounts images on the outer surface and uses stroboscopic flashes to trigger the illusion of motion. The motor’s rotor, built from Lego and aluminum balls, spins via electrostatic interaction: each ball becomes a monopole in a plasma field and is repelled and attracted by alternating brass electrodes, generating torque and rotation at ~200 RPM.

To synchronize the animation, the strobe flashes once per frame. With 12 frames on the cylinder and a rotation speed of 200 RPM, the sampling rate is calculated as:
200 RPM × 12 frames = 2,400 flashes per minute

As the cylinder slows, visual aliasing creates the illusion of reversing direction—an elegant demonstration of the phi phenomenon and frame-rate interplay.
Electrostatic motors like this one, first conceived in the 18th century, now power MEMS devices. This build showcases their enduring relevance and artistic potential.
