In this experiment I use a coil from an electromagnet and when I approach another coil with a small 3 volts light bulb, this one turns on. This is how a transformer works. The first coil is the PRIMARY and is connected to the power grid (220 volts). The coil with the light bulb is the SECONDARY. The metal bar core is composed of several plates glued. This ferromagnetic material, wih a high magnetic permeability, is used to confine and guide magnetic fields (like a funnel). This core increases the magnetic field to thousands of times the strength of the field of the coil alone.
