Eddy current or electromagnetic braking system working model for school science project.
Electromagnetic braking system works by the use of opposing force created due to eddy current in rotating wheel. In this system, a conducting disc made of copper or aluminum is attached to the rotating wheel of a vehicle. A high power magnetic is kept near the rotating wheel which is away from the wheel in running condition. When the brake is applied during vehicle movement, then the magnet comes near the rotating disc which induces a EMF in the wheel that produces a eddy current in the rotating wheel. The eddy current produces a mechanical force in direction opposite to the rotation of wheel. So the wheel gets slowed down and stopped without any frictional forces. This is the principle of electromagnetic braking system or eddy current braking system.
