Textbooks say oxygen is given off at the positive electrode, but the operating voltage has to increase to observe this. This is using a new design in electrolytic cells. To understand electrolysis, students should be familiar with solvated ions. The crucial inter-particle attraction is dipole-ion attraction. WE know this as the solvation of ions. it is not commonly taught but just as important as hydrogen bonding and dipole-dipole attractions.
