Electric Sufi is a new project by singer Sahrah, instrumentalist Mina Salama, and producer Professor Chill. It draws upon ancient spiritual traditions to create music that aims to inspire audiences to engage with environmental issues. The musicians call on a wide range of influences, including poetry by Rumi and Sufism, Coptic Christianity, Arabic music, ancient chant, and electronica, to create a syncretic mysticism that focuses on common ground within the ice flows and fire storms of climate change. Brought up in a musical family, and embedded in Sufi traditions, Sahrah waves her vocal lines across Professor Chill's synthesised beats and textures. A former soloist in the Egyptian National Opera, Mina Salama provides a perfect virtuosic counterpoint of nay, oud, duduk and saz. This compelling mix is presented in front of video material from environmental agencies such as Greenpeace, Nasa, and research projects, pointing out the need for all cultures and communities to come together to address our present climate emergency.
