A new type of aircraft took to the skies over Newport News as Electra demonstrated its hybrid-electric Ultra Short aircraft at Newport News/Williamsburg Airport.
The demonstration marked Electra’s first stop on a four-day trip across Virginia under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program.
Electra’s technology demonstrator is designed to take off and land in as little as 150 feet, potentially allowing the aircraft to operate from spaces where conventional airplanes cannot.
During the demonstration, the aircraft flew from the National Capital Region to Newport News before continuing to Richmond, highlighting potential future connections between Hampton Roads and other Virginia communities.
The Peninsula Airport Commission and the City of Newport News say the demonstration could help position Newport News/Williamsburg Airport as a hub for emerging aviation technologies and future aerospace investment.
