Swingin' D Horse Rescue saved Howie from slaughter expecting to immediately euthanize him due to poor body condition and severe arthritis. He and his lifelong companion, also dumped for slaughter, were used and abused until they were profoundly lame from overwork and neglect.

To our great surprise, Howie's companion, Wilma, nearly 30 and skin and bones, had a baby on board. That baby - now a yearling - saved both of the old horses' lives. Once Wilma gave birth, baby Jozi breathed new life into the worn out old pair. Now, the happy trio lives out their lives in pastures of green - pampered and spoiled to their hearts' content.

Our greatest challenge is trimming Howie's hooves. His severe arthritis prevents him from bending his knees, and the pain is so intense, he puts up a heck of a fight. It's far too stressful on him, and he's impossible to control.
