For Rykard upgrade the Serpent-Hunter as high as you possibly can. The Serpent-Hunter is a great level 1 run weapon that you can use for the rest of the main game if you want. I don't think the Serpent-Hunter is good enough for the DLC though (I used Star Fists for the DLC and for a lot of the main game too). Jump attacks are the best bet for safe/strong attacks. When he gets staggered get in some fully charged R2s with the axe talisman on and/or the spiked tear for your mixed physick. His attacks will be deceptive in when you can dodge, so try to learn the timing as best you can. Rykard really isnt too bad in a level 1 run because the boss fight is made to be doable regardless of your stats. He hits hard though so some armor and boiled crab will help you a lot like it did me.
