Electronic Logging Devices were supposed to make trucking safer and compliance easier. But what happens when the technology designed to enforce the rules can be manipulated by bad actors?

In this episode of Sense Per Mile, Kevin Hall, Karen Smerchek and Thom Albrecht are joined by Jeffrey Farrington, President of Assured Telematics, for a deep dive into ELD technology, self-certification and the growing concerns surrounding oversight and compliance in the trucking industry.

The conversation examines a recurring problem across trucking: bad actors taking advantage of systems built around self-certification. After recent discussions about questionable carriers and problems within CDL training, the panel turns its attention to ELD providers and asks whether the current system does enough to ensure the technology fleets rely on actually follows federal requirements.

Jeffrey and the Sense Per Mile crew explore how ELDs have evolved since the difficult early days of adoption, including what happens to drivers and fleets when an ELD is no longer usable and they are suddenly forced to transition to another system. For drivers, that can mean learning new technology while continuing to manage hours-of-service requirements and keep freight moving.

The group also tackles one of the biggest questions surrounding ELD oversight: Should technology providers be able to self-certify their own products? With today's technology, the panel discusses whether stronger independent validation could be implemented much faster than in the past and whether basic functionality testing could identify systems that allow users to circumvent regulations.

They also examine the responsibility of ELD providers themselves. The questions carriers ask technology vendors can sometimes reveal exactly what they're trying to accomplish, raising questions about what responsibility reputable providers have when customers request features that could potentially be used to get around the rules.

Ultimately, the conversation isn't about eliminating competition or limiting innovation. It's about ensuring that ELD providers compete on a level playing field and that the technology being used across the trucking industry actually performs according to the regulations it was designed to support.

Whether you're a fleet owner, driver, safety professional, technology provider or trucking executive, this episode of Sense Per Mile takes a closer look at the intersection of technology, compliance and accountability and asks what needs to change to prevent bad actors from exploiting the system.
