A strong super El Niño has started, but its main impact on grain and oilseed crops is expected to land between September and December.

Bertrand Oesterle, Vice President of Clearing and Execution Sales at StoneX, explains what the weather risk means for wheat, palm oil and soybeans.

Heat has already run through the European Union and the Black Sea, yet the crop damage forecasters worry about is still ahead. India is expected to plant a lower wheat area, and Malaysia and Indonesia face lower palm oil production if the heat arrives. The Food and Agriculture Organization has called El Niño likely to reduce crops worldwide and to feed into food inflation over the next three to six months, even as Brazilian soybean estimates keep improving.
