We take a look at the EFR32xG24 Channel Sounding Dev Kit from Silicon Labs. It helps developers leverage Bluetooth channel sounding to estimate distance in size- and power-constrained devices such as key fobs and asset tags.
Inside the box, you’ll find the BRD2606A channel sounding dev kit board, and we’ll use two of them so we have an initiator and a reflector.
In this demo, we’re going to use Silicon Labs’ Simplicity Studio to program these boards with demo applications so they can connect and measure the distance between them. For detailed step-by-step instructions, refer to the getting started guide.
Program one board with the Bluetooth SoC CS Reflector demo, then unplug it and insert a CR2032 battery cell.
Program the other board with the Bluetooth NCP CS demo. Keep it plugged in.
Open Simplicity Studio’s tools menu and open the Channel Sounding Analyzer. Select the device and connect to it. Click the wireless symbol next to the reflector board under Discovered Reflectors, click OK, and we’ll start to collect data while I wander around the office. Red is the distance in meters, orange is the RSSI based distance measurement, and green is the likeness value, with a higher percentage indicating a more reliable distance estimate.
