Join teachers from the Charles White Visual Arts LACMA Magnet School as they share different approaches to arts integration in the classroom and discuss how increased access to visual art has impacted their students’ social-emotional skills, academic success, and overall engagement.
Raquela Bases is a 4th grade teacher at Charles White Visual Arts LACMA Magnet in Los Angeles, CA. This is her second year teaching at a visual arts magnet. She is a graduate of UCLA's Teacher Education Program and a member of the UCLA Writing Project Leadership Team.
Cecille Cervancia is a mother of 2, an artist, and an educator with LAUSD since 2007. She has taught elementary school as well as reading, math, and art to middle school students, and is currently a 2nd grade teacher at the Charles White Visual Arts LACMA Magnet. Cecille has been a dedicated member of United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) since 2019 and is also a core member of the Los Angeles chapter of AF3IRM, a transnational feminist, anti-imperialist organization that mobilizes around immigration, trafficking/sexual exploitation, and militarism/state violence.
Olivia Martinez is a public elementary school teacher in Los Angeles, CA. This is her 22nd year working as an educator for LAUSD. During this time she has served as a classroom teacher, Reading Intervention teacher, and Instructional Coach. Olivia currently teaches 1st grade at Charles White Visual Arts LACMA Magnet.
Katherine Theisen has over 20 years of teaching experience with LAUSD. She has centered her work with children on developing creativity. Ms. Theisen presently teaches 3rd grade at Charles White Visual Arts LACMA Magnet, surrounded by caring, like-minded teachers and artists for whom she is grateful. This position has allowed her to explore arts integration. She is both inspired and challenged by this work and finds inspiration in her students. Her continued commitment to the creative process sustains her at this difficult time in education.
The Educator Speaker Series invites K-12 teachers to present on crucial topics in art education that center on criticality and social justice.
