Tubin's middle-period symphonies are some of his best-known works, his four-movement eighth being the last of them. Written in 1965-1966 (and described by some as Tubin's masterpiece), the searching opening introduces one of the composer's most astringent and intense essays in the symphonic genre - one which nevertheless retains a certain vivacity and vitality throughout. As with practically all of Tubin's symphonies, the mood is augmented by the splendidly chosen and varied orchestration, which is well worth careful study.
