Born to Be Wild is a single from the American musical group Steppenwolf, released in 1968 as the third extract from the first studio album Steppenwolf.
In popular culture it is often associated with the image of bikers, especially following its use in the soundtrack of the movie Easy Rider. Often the song is described as the first heavy metal song ever written, as well as inspiring the name of the genre itself. Although these claims are still under discussion, the second verse in the lyrics of this song (which refers to a "heavy metal thunder", referring to the rumble caused by the crackle of the motorcycle muffler - is from where Leonard Mogel took the inspiration to coin the name of his artistic-cultural-musical magazine) is the first recording in which the expression "heavy metal" is used in a musical context.
Although initially offered to other bands, such as Human Expression, Born to Be Wild was first recorded by Steppenwolf in 1968. Under the stage name used at the beginning of Dennis Edmonton's career, Mars Bonfire, author of the text, he was previously a member of the Sparrows, the Steppenwolf's predecessor group. "Born to be Wild" was the group's second single, and the one that achieved the most results, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2004, US magazine Rolling Stone placed Born to be Wild at position 129 on the list of the 500 best. songs of all time.
