Today, I’m in El Mirage Lake in California, U.S.A.
And I’m shooting this HG Motorsports 911 GT3.
I’m going to be using a variety of techniques to capture the car in motion.
We're using panning shots.
Tracking shots.
And aerial action shots.
Cars are much more than just being an inanimate object to us car enthusiasts.
It’s the culture. It’s the lifestyle. It’s the people.
It’s a way of life.
When I bought my first car and I was getting involved in the car-culture thing, I really wanted to capture that with a camera.
I wasn’t a creative person. I wasn’t into photography at all.
But I found that it was an amazing creative outlet and I wanted to show the world, and to show online, my passion for cars and what I was seeing through my own eyes.
Every car is different. Every location is different.
And the character of the car is always different and you need to tailor a formula that’s unique to that specific set of variables.
Static shots allow me to really focus on showing the lines of the car.
It allows me to use light and shadow to sculpt the car and basically create the image, choreograph the image, and show off its distinguishing profile.
But ultimately, cars are designed as a tool for moving… for speed and performance.
So capturing it in motion has the advantage of shooting a car in its element, doing the things that it was meant to do.
So that’s why we have this Porsche 911 GT3 here in this dry lake bed.
It’s basically this giant playground for a car nut to play with this amazing machine.
There’s a lot of different ways that you can capture motion: tracking shots, panning shots, high shot of speed, action shots.
Each and every one of these methods highlight a different aspect of action, so they suit certain images and certain moments more so than others.
Because cars do have character... they have history… pedigree… ultimately they have emotion.
If I can capture that, if I can bring that out, to capture the car as being more than inanimate objects, then the image becomes more than just eye candy… it becomes a portrait of the car and what it represents.
That’s ultimately what separates my work from others.
That seems to be what defines as my style.
