Eastman CEO Mark Costa talks about the future of plastic waste and Eastman’s plan for a better future with Jim Cantore during The Weather Channel’s AMHQ morning show.
Mark Costa shares Eastman’s initiative to improve the global plastic waste crisis for our generation and future generations to come.
With the amount of plastic we use daily, plastic waste has made its way to all corners of the world — from our landfills to depths of the ocean. While mechanical recycling is an option, it’s not enough.
Mechanical recycling physically breaks down only clear plastic waste. As a result, only 12% of plastic that we toss in the recycling bin actually gets recycled.
But there is good news. Eastman has spent decades developing molecular recycling to break down all forms of plastic to be reused over and over again — forever.
By using plastic waste instead of fossil fuels as our source for new plastic, we can reduce our carbon footprint by about 20%–30% and divert plastic waste from our landfills and ecosystems.
With molecular recycling, we are moving closer to a truly circular economy by creating value from waste and reducing the impacts of climate change.
