The Pakenham East Metro Trains Maintenance Facility is a 118-hectare, state-of-the-art depot designed to maintain 70 High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMTs) for Melbourne's network. Completed in 2018, it is the largest facility of its kind in Australia, featuring a 30-train stabling yard and Victoria's only dedicated test track.
Purpose: Houses and maintains the new 7-car HCMT fleet, reducing congestion on the Pakenham/Cranbourne and Sunbury lines.
Capacity: The depot can maintain 80 trains in total.
Features: Includes an Integrated Test Facility (ITF) for, and advanced automated robotic cleaning.
Sustainability: The facility was awarded for environmental excellence, utilizing 90% local content during construction.
Location: Situated in Pakenham East near Nar Nar Goon, between the Princes Freeway and Oakview Lane.
The project is part of a $2.3 billion investment by the Victorian Government and is delivered by the Evolution Rail Consortium.
