Thank you to our friend @HannahHowlett for lending a hand in applying the second coat of earthen plaster to the inside of our #StrawbaleToolshed.
Later her work will be scrutinized by her husband and YouTube creator Derek @handeeman Howlett.
Hint: She killed it!

FIRST COAT OF EARTHEN PLASTER

2 gallons water

1 - 5 gallon bucket of OUR native soil which is about 10-15% clay, sifted through ¼" hardware mesh

¼ of a 5 gallon bucket of clay sifted through ⅜" hardware mesh

2 large double handfuls of chopped straw.

SECOND COAT OF EARTHEN PLASTER

2 gallons water

1 - 5 gallon bucket of OUR native soil which is about 10-15% clay, sifted through 1/8" hardware mesh

¼ of a 5 gallon bucket of clay sifted through ⅜" hardware mesh

2 large double handfuls of FINELYchopped straw run through our leaf shredder 2X.

2 small soup cans of Portland Cement, sifted if clumpy.

4 oz. Quickrete concrete colorant to counteract the "graying effect" of the Portland Cement.

We add the ingredients to the cement mixer in the following order to get the best mix:

Water

Portland Cement (Let that mix for a few minutes to fully dissolve the cement)

Clay

Colorant (if used)

Straw (let mix until straw is fully coated)

Native soil

Once the ingredients are in the cement mixer, the mixing time is typically 5-10 minutes. The recipe can be adjusted during the mixing stage. If it is too wet and loose, add soil and / or  straw.
