I tried a Victorian recipe for chocolate cakes from the April 1897 edition of Hearth and Home magazine. This was a fun baking challenge - with no baking powder, no oven instructions and no electric whisk. Here is the full recipe as printed in 1897, in case you want to try it out for yourselves:
Here is an excellent recipe for little chocolate cakes. Work a quarter of a pound of butter into a cream, add one ounce of powdered chocolate, and two ounces of castor sugar. Work together for ten minutes, then mix in two eggs and two ounces of fine flour, and work again for ten minutes. Bake in small cake tins for twenty minutes.
