Someone requested information about ear tagging mice, so since I had a few mice to tag this weekend, I took a little video of the process.

Tagging mice does not hurt them any worse than getting ears pierced does humans. It is used for identification purposes when tracking lineages or other information that isn't really apparent looking at a mouse, as well as telling multiple similar looking mice apart. We use it for our breeders, to track lineage, genes, age, health, litter sizes, litter health, age, locations in bins, and incoming/outgoing sources.

Similarly, scruffing a mouse (when done properly) does not harm them even as adults, beyond a minor amount of temporary stress. When done properly, their breathing is not restricted. Scruffing is used in rodent care to make health checks on bellies, vents/nipples, teeth, and paws easier. It can also be used in temperament testing.
