Electronic Arts Just Got Sold For $55 Billion
Electronic Arts recently announced that they have reached an agreement to be acquired by investors that include the Saudi PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners for $55 billion and will be made private.
The Saudi government’s involvement in esports and gaming has been well documented in recent years, as EA will now join a continually growing list of assets in the Saudi portfolio, such as ESL, FACEIT, SNK, and Nintendo (minority investor). As industry expert George Osborn puts it:
“It's massive news in terms of Saudi Arabia's soft power strategy. EA is the perfect company for what Saudi Arabia wants to achieve in terms of its influence.”
Jason Schreier also reported that as of the deal, there will more than likely be mass layoffs, more aggressive monetization, and other big cost-cutting measures coming in the foreseeable future, as the company is being taken private.
