Ruben Östlund interviewed by Stanislas Ide at CINEMATEK. 08.05.2023
"I would say, in all of my films, the kind of situations the characters are dealing with, is that they are thrown into a set-up that can push them into different directions. Often, they are dealing with a dilemma. (…) Dilemma is so efficient to use when you are writing a film. You have a character that has two or more options, but none of the options are easy. And all of the options will have consequences." Ruben Östlund

They all dream of love: forbidden love, epistolary love, impossible love... They talk about it, sing about it, and dance to the rhythm of the choir of shampoo girls.
An outstanding ensemble cast, including Delphine Seyrig and 1980s pop star Lio, glides through the shopping arcade in a finely choreographed sequence, to the tunes of an infectious pop soundtrack. Akerman herself wrote the lyrics for the deceptively cheerful songs and constantly misleads the viewer: is this film truly an ironic critique of the hyper-commercial 1980s or rather a loving reflection on everyday life? Akerman fully indulged in the sound design for this film, which is packed with small but meaningful discoveries: from the click of high heels on the floor to the unwelcome sound of a zipper, to the ever-changing tone and volume of the many conversations and songs.
Golden Eighties was restored in 2024 by the Royal Belgian Film Archive - CINEMATEK and L'Immagine Ritrovata (Bologna), in collaboration with the Fondation Chantal Akerman with the assistance of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles and the valuable support of Leora Barish, Henry Bean, Ostrovsky Family Fund (OFF), SWA.
This restoration was carried out based on the 35mm negatives from the collections of the Royal Belgian Film Archive, where the film was digitized in 4K.
Synopsis: Anna is a filmmaker. We will never know exactly how or why she chose this profession, except that it allows and forces her to wander, to be nomadic. We see her traveling from city to city to promote her films, much like a traveling saleswoman. The temporary stops and fleeting encounters along the way paint a portrait of a young woman searching for something that seems to be just out of view.

Belgium seemed to be a liberal cinephile's paradise without film censorship. There was only a non-compulsory screening for films that people wanted to be shown to children under 16 evaluated by the Belgian Film Inspection Commission: it checked films for violence, sex, drugs and other dangerous issues. They also did not hesitate to suggest cuts in films so that children could watch them. Many of these 'cuts' have been preserved at CINEMATEK. Daniel Biltereyst (Professor in Film and Media Studies at the Department of Communication Studies, Ghent University, Belgium,) and Bruno Mestdagh (Head of the digital collection, CINEMATEK ) have made a unique selection of these 'cuts'. What started as a joke, became a frank exercise revisiting her work, her own bias and views, hoping to reframe cinema to celebrate filmmakers, the female body and people who want to break away from the ‘heteropatriarchal regime’. Due to Youtube’s strict policies about nudity and in respect with copyrights regulations this video does not include the presented film fragments as shown during the lecture. Iris Brey focuses in the lecture in English on filmmakers Alice Guy, Germaine Dulac, Chantal Akerman, Agnès Varda, and Barbara Hammer, celebrating, showing and exchanging about the complexity of gender and female representation. There is a short introduction in French (0’00’’ – 0’57’’) and two audience questions at the end, also in French. To complete the answers to the last questions, 95% of the films mentioned during the lecture have been screened once or more in recent times at CINEMATEK. We have a monthly night "Our story" which shares the same sensibilities.
