Top 5 Greatest Knights in Medieval History
updated
Who was El Cid? Many know him as Spain’s most iconic hero. But beneath the legend we discover the true El Cid of history – Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar – a knight born in Castile in the mid-eleventh century. He began as the right hand man to King Sancho of Castile: the King’s greatest general who won victory after victory. But after his king died amid suspicious circumstances, El Cid was banished from the kingdom of his fathers, and became a mercenary captain in service to the Emir of Zaragoza. Eventually, El Cid would strike out on his own, and become a conqueror in his own right. Ultimately, El Cid would battle one of the most powerful forces of the period – the Almoravid Empire. But what motivated the Cid?

During the Third Crusade, Richard the Lionheart, King of England, and Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt, clashed in one of the most pivotal battles of the medieval era. It was a contest of will, faith, arms, and courage. The result would shape history for centuries to come.

In 1176, Baldwin IV, the Leper King of Jerusalem, turned fifteen, and fully assumed power as king. His first act was to launch a military campaign against his powerful neighbor, Saladin, who ruled the vast Ayyubid Empire stretching from Egypt to Syria. The timing wasn't good for Saladin, who wanted to focus on reducing his Zengid rivals in Syria. Baldwin's ascension forced Saladin to focus on the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Both of these great rulers would meet in combat in 1177 at the Battle of Montigsard, one of the greatest clashes of the Crusades. Here, Baldwin the Leper King was assisted by the Knights Templar, and Raynald of Chatillon. The crusader forces were vastly outnumbered, but they were determined.

Knight, hero, champion, conqueror, tyrant, bandit, saint, legend – Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar – the man known as El Cid – has been called many things throughout the centuries. Above all, he is known as Spain’s iconic warrior. His enduring title – El Cid – reflects the complex history of Iberia – in Arabic, al-Sid means “the Lord." Long before he was known as El Cid, Rodrigo Diaz was a knight loyal to the King of Castile. But after his king was killed amid suspicious circumstances, Rodrigo was exiled from his homeland, and became a mercenary in service of the Muslim Emir of Zaragoza. Later, El Cid would strike out on his own, and become virtually a king in his own right.
The Vikings who assailed the shores of Britain and France were mostly Norwegian or Danish. But Viking adventurers from Sweden were drawn east, to the Baltic Sea and beyond. What drove their wanderlust was the dirhem, a high-grade silver coin. In the 9th century, the Caliphate’s wealthy markets teemed with luxury goods. These coins found their way to Sweden, and sparked the curiosity of enterprising chiefs. On the Swedish island of Gotland, vast silver hoards filled with dirhems confirm the activity of Swedish Vikings trading and plundering in the Baltic.
September, 1191: Richard the Lionheart advances south during the Third Crusade. However, Saladin is determined to stop him. Near the town of Arsuf, the two will meet in battle during a critical moment of the Third Crusade.

FIRST MONGOL INVASION OF HUNGARY - In 1241, Hungary, led by King Bela IV, faced one of the most devastating attacks of the medieval era. The attack was orchestrated by the Mongol military genius Subotai, as well as Batu, grandson of Genghis Khan and one-day founder of the Golden Horde. By now the Mongols were considered virtually unstoppable conquerors, sweeping aside armies from east to west. On the battlefield of Mohi, King Bela would be joined by a few staunch allies – the Croatians under Duke Koloman, and a band of Templar Knights led by Master Rembald de Voczon, as well as the warrior Archbishop Ugrin Csák. Subotai’s plan of attack was brilliant, and King Bela seemed to fall right into it. But would the Mongols truly emerge victorious? Indeed, what were the real results of the Battle of Mohi?

Documentary taking a look at the Fourth Crusade, one of the most widely-discussed episodes in Crusades history. In 1204, an army of Venetians and Frankish knights captured and sacked Constantinople, the ancient capital of the Byzantine Empire. History has remembered this event as the culmination of the Fourth Crusade. For many, the Fourth Crusade is to blame for the ultimate demise of the Byzantine Empire. But is this true? Is there any real reason to believe that the Fourth Crusade was the decisive event that destroyed the Byzantine Empire? Indeed, is it possible that earlier developments ultimately ensured the downfall of Byzantium?

From the innovations of the Normans in the 11th century, to the increasingly more elaborate armor of the late 13th century, knights were constantly seeking ways to reduce their vulnerability on the battlefield, and to maximize their ability to inflict damage on an opponent. Today on Real Crusades History, we’ll take a journey through the military technology of the Middle Ages, and see how the fighting men of the era met the challenges and dangers of warfare as they armed themselves for battle.

Who were the Knights Templar? This lecture series will delve into the history of these warrior monks, an order of knights who gave up everything to defend pilgrims and sacred places. Clad in their iconic white mantles marked with a scarlet cross, these brother knights were the hope of pilgrims traveling the dangerous roads of the Holy Land. All through the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the Templars thundered across the battlefields of the crusades, often defeating their enemies even when they were greatly outnumbered. Today, we’ll investigate the background of the Knights Templar, and come to understand their place in the history of the Middle Ages.

For some, this was the old Roman Empire reborn. For others, this was the dawn of a new empire – the Germanic Holy Roman Empire. Undoubtedly, Charlemagne had brought the west to new heights of power after centuries of obscurity. His reign would come to define the western Middle Ages.

Charlemagne's history is remarkable. He was rival to the Byzantine Empire, and his reign as King of the Franks and Emperor of the West came to define the western medieval world.
Charlemagne doted on his daughters. The court poet Angilbert gives a striking description of Charlemange’s daughters: There was Rotrud, Charlemagne’s favorite, her pale blonde hair intertwined with ribbons of violet and strings of pearls, a coronet of gold circling her head. Next came the lovely Bertha, wearing a golden diadem, with golden filaments sparkling in her gleaming hair, her snowy shoulders covered by an ermine wrap, her belt shining in many colors. Then there was lily-white Gisla, appareled in a purple gown shot through with tints of mauve, her face, her hair gleaming with many lights. Even the teenaged Theotrade was clad in rare emeralds adorning her lovely neck.
