- Are you struggling with a broken dustbin lid on your Dyson vacuum cleaner? You’re not alone. This is one of the most common failure points across Dyson models, especially from the Dyson V10, V11, V12, V15, and the newer generation V8 and V7 cordless vacuums (sometimes referred to as V5 Gen2 or V6+ in other markets).
In this video, I show you exactly how this break happens and why — from a mechanical perspective. The small plastic tab that holds the plexiglass lid closed eventually breaks due to a phenomenon called plastic fatigue. Every time you open and close the dustbin, the plastic flexes slightly. Over time, this repeated stress leads to microcracks that weaken the structure until it finally snaps off. Once it does, the bin won’t stay shut, and you’re stuck with a vacuum that leaks or won’t pick up properly.
Dyson does not offer a replacement for this part individually — not even for the dustbin lid. However, I’ve found a third-party replacement dustbin on Amazon, made in China, which is a solid option to get your vacuum working again. The fit is decent and it restores function, but there’s a tradeoff: the silicone seals on the knock-off bin are stiff and non-flexible, making it much harder to open and empty the dust without effort. So while it’s a good workaround, it’s not quite as smooth or easy to use as the original.
I also demonstrate a temporary fix using tape, which you can use while you wait for your replacement part.
