Between 1933 and 1962, when ECU was formerly known as the Vancouver School of Art, former Director Charles Hepburn introduced the “Beaux Arts Ball” as an initiative to expand the school’s presence in the community beyond its modest location at Cambie and Dunsmuir Street on Block 37.
The Beaux Art Balls were held at the Commodore Ballroom on Granville Street and each year a different theme was chosen. Students, staff and guests would create their own costumes and help prepare backdrops on particular themes, one of which was insect themed. Now that’s a fact that got us buzzing! 🐝
