Here’s a simple question for the spray foam industry:
Once the foam is installed and the contractor drives away, can we PROVE what product is actually in that building?
In Canada, closed-cell spray polyurethane foam is required to be readily identifiable, and color has long been part of that identification system. Yet across much of the U.S. market, foam can look remarkably similar from one manufacturer to another.
That creates an enormous opening for bait-and-switch installations, product substitution, and plausible deniability.
A homeowner buys Brand A.
A specification calls for Brand A.
The contractor says they installed Brand A.
But six months later, somebody opens the wall.
Can anybody actually prove it?
That’s why I believe manufacturers should embrace distinctive, recognizable colors for their foam. Not because color alone solves traceability—it doesn't—but because it is one more layer of accountability.
And this conversation gets MUCH bigger.
Color → Product identification → Lot numbers → Installer identification → Processing data → Environmental conditions → Photos → Digital validation → Permanent installation records.
We need to make it progressively harder to cheat and progressively easier for professional contractors to prove what they installed and how they installed it.
The good contractors shouldn't fear traceability.
They should demand it.
Because the future of spray foam cannot continue to be:
"Trust me. That's what we sprayed."
It needs to become:
"Here is the proof."
That’s how we protect homeowners.
That’s how we protect manufacturers.
That’s how we protect professional contractors.
And that’s how we build credibility around SPF.
Dye it. Identify it. Track it. Validate it.
Proof. Not promises.
