The hike to Dusty Lake offers a captivating journey through the sculpted desert landscape of the Columbia Basin in central Washington. The route we took ambles past a series of small lakes tucked beneath dark basalt cliffs, then gently rolls up and down through rocky terrain before descending to Dusty Lake — a deep-blue plunge pool nestled at the base of towering walls.
From the lake, we took a scrambler’s route upward to a large basalt cavern — a cool, echoing space carved into the rock. Continuing onward, we followed a dramatic wall of columnar basalt, revealing striking geological patterns shaped by ancient lava flows and floods. Eventually, we reached a gap in the ridge, where a short climb brought us to the other side toward the Ancient Lakes basin. From there, the return route led us through open desert and past quiet ponds, completing a scenic and adventurous loop through one of Washington’s most fascinating and geologically rich landscapes.
